Credo Mutwa

Credo Vusamazulu Mutwa was born on 21 July 1921 in the majestic mountains of Mfume, Zululand – an area in the heartland of what is now known as KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. He was a polymath – a master of many disciplines – whose legacy spanned over a century. He was well known as a Guardian of Umlando – a custodian of the ancient histories of Africa. To many across the globe he is remembered as a Sanusi.

In 1976 His house and  consulting rooms (also known as an Ndumba) were desecrated and burnt down by angry youth during the Soweto uprisings. In the Southern African cultures the Ndumba is the space where indigenous health practitioners practice their craft. For Credo Mutwa, this was the space where he was able to connect with all the ancients spirits across from all over the world.

iSanusi Credo Mutwa tragically passed away on 25 March 2021, just as the world was entering into the first lockdown period due to the Covid-19  pandemic.  45 years after the burning of this sacred shrine, and as we celebrate his centenary,  the Credo Mutwa Foundation is rebuilding his Ndumba and restoring his legacy.
